Known as the “The Pride of the Hill”, the Marching Hilltoppers are West Liberty’s newest, most diverse, and visible ensemble on campus. You may experience the approximately 50-member powerhouse at all home games and two local parades. They perform 2-3 different shows each season with only two rehearsals/week! Best of all, the Marching Hilltoppers are the only band in America in which EVERY member receives a scholarship! Scholarships
Scholarships will be awarded to every member accepted into the ensemble! Scholarship awards follow the system below:- Music-majors (Instrumentalists/Colorguard) $1,000/year
- Non-majors (Instrumentalists/Colorguard) $750/year
- Crew members (Non-performing members) $500/year
Audition Requirements
Auditions for the Marching Hilltoppers are open to any current or prospective (i.e. incoming freshmen and/or transfer) full-time West Liberty University student. The audition consists of two parts: an individual performance and an interview with the Director. Both will occur during your audition session. For audition requirements and recommended repertoire, please find your instrument below.BRASS AND WOODWINDS
- Scales/arpeggios (up to four sharps and four flats).
- One prepared piece demonstrating your ability to perform musically (e.g., note accuracy, rhythmic accuracy, adherence to and consistency of tempo, dynamics, various articulations, phrasing, and expression). See “Recommended Audition Repertoire” below.

COLORGUARD
Prepared routine lasting between 3-5 minutes. Auditionees are encouraged to display any experience they may have had with the following in their routine: flags, swing flags, air-blades, rifles, sabers, dance, etc. Lack of experience in these areas will not automatically exclude auditionees from membership; however those with experience in multiple areas of visual performance will be given first consideration.
CREW (Interview Only)
Members of the crew play a vital role in the success of the ensemble. They are non-performing members whose responsibilities may include transporting equipment, filing/copying music parts, upkeep of uniforms, etc. Non musicians are highly encouraged to participate in this area of the ensemble! To become a Crew member and receive a $500/year scholarship, please schedule an interview with Prof. Jay Ware at jware@westliberty.edu.
