David Allen Wehr, concert pianist, has performed over 1,000 concerts in 30 countries as well as 13 seasons in Community Concerts as recitalist and pianist with the Sartory Trio. Soloist with the National Symphony at the Kennedy Center, London, Houston, Chautauqua, New Zealand Symphonies, and all the major Spanish and Latin American orchestras. Winner, Gold Medal, 1987 Santander International Piano Competition, Spain; 1983 National Federation of Music Clubs Young Artist Award; 1975 Kosciuszko-Chopin Competition, New York City. Mr. Wehr has an extensive discography on the Connoisseur Society label, including the complete Beethoven sonata cycle. He is a frequent masterclass clinician and judges regularly at national and international piano competitions. Mr. Wehr is Professor of Piano at Duquesne University’s Mary Pappert School of Music.
Concert Series – Borealis Wind Quintet – Oct 31
The Borealis Wind Quintet, nominated for a 2006 Grammy Award in the Chamber Music Category, is acclaimed as one of America’s preeminent chamber ensembles. The highest musical integrity, irresistible energy and five-fold charisma distinguish Borealis in the chamber music field. Audiences love their exquisite programming that includes the finest of the classics, engaging commissioned works, opera arias and works for piano and winds. The Washington Post praised their “sensitive collaborations that have a sophisticated and cosmopolitan air.” Peter G. Davies of the New York Times described one concert as “a polished, elegantly turned performance…each work received lively, expert and musicianly treatment by this skilled and exceptionally talented chamber group.” Joseph Horowitz, also of the New York Times describes “lively communicative readings…the performance was a scintillating one.” The Philadelphia Inquirer writes that “they demonstrated the sort of rapport that characterizes the very best chamber playing.”
Concert Series – Ion Sound Project – Nov 9
The IonSound Project is a sextet comprised of flutist Peggy Yoo, clarinetist Kathleen Costello, violinist Laura Motchalov, cellist Elisa Kohanski, pianist Rob Frankenberry and percussionist Eliseo Rael. The members represent some of the most in demand young musicians in the Pittsburgh area. Collectively, they perform with such ensembles as the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Alabama Symphony, the Pittsburgh Opera, the Wheeling Symphony, the Erie Philharmonic, the Youngstown Symphony, the Canton Symphony, and have also appeared with the Columbus Symphony, and the Charleston Symphony. The IonSound Project seeks to add to Pittsburgh’s cultural life by programming innovative concerts, commissioning works of new music, collaborating with artists in a variety of disciplines, and exploring the boundaries between concert and popular music.
